AFRO-BRAZILIAN DANCE

INSTRUCTOR: Mariano Silva

Afro-Brazilian Dance (Batucada) introduces people to the vitality of Afro-Brazilian percussion thru movement and sound. Batucada comes from the word "batuque", a term used to identify rhythms and traditions of African origin that have persevered in Brazil. Batucada music is played on powerful percussion instruments including atabaque drums, the timbau, the repinique and the surdo bass drums. Batucada is danced through charismatic solos and playful duets, all under the supportive gaze of a community circle. Batucada is a celebration of creativity, community and individuality through polyrhythmic play.
Mariano has studied and performed Afro-Brazilian Dance in his hometown of Salvador Bahia, Brazil for over ten years. He was a student and performer at the local University and part of Mr. King's famous Ballet Folclorico da Bahia. In the United States, he has toured with Ballet Folclorico do Brasil (a world-renowned company out of Santa Monica), taught Summer Dance Santa Barbara and local ongoing dance and capoeira classes.
